Edgar Berlanga is scheduled to fight Jason Quigley tonight at Madison Square Garden Theatre, New York in what is what promises to be one of his most important fights to date.
Berlanga, a 26-year-old from New York is steadily building a strong resume and is starting to get mentioned in the same sentence as Canelo Alvarez.
Since making his pro debut in 2016, the American with Puerto Rican heritage has been mostly impressive and currently boasts an undefeated record of 20-0, 16 KOs.
And some believe The Chosen One has the potential to be the future of the super middleweight division despite looking unspectacular when outpointing Roamer Alexis Angulo around one year ago.
However, the hype train behind Berlanga will vanish into dust if he cannot overcome Quigley in dominant fashion.
After all, it was only a couple of years ago when Quigley was destroyed by Demetrius Andrade in two rounds and the Irishman was then out of the ring for over a year before making a successful comeback against Gabor Gorbics.
Therefore, like many other prospects on the come-up, it’s not a question if Berlanga overcomes Quigley, but rather the performance he produces to get his hand raised.
Despite having an impressive knockout ratio of 80%, the last time Berlanga won via KO or stoppage was in 2020 against Ulises Sierra in an eight-rounder.
Berlanga’s last four opponents have all gone the distance and notably, the New York resident was dropped by Marcelo Esteban Coceres in 2021.
And Berlanga is under no illusion that he needs to win big tonight or he can kiss goodbye to a lucrative bout in the near future.
“For me, there’s bigger fish out there”, Berlanga said at the final press conference.
“They’re talking about the Triple G’s [Gennadiy Golovkin], the Charlo’s [Jermall and Jermell Charlo]. These are the type of guys I want to get in the ring with. I’m already at that level where I’m seasoned and ready to step in and get to that level.
“I just got to beat the s*** out of Jason Quigley this weekend.”
As for Quigley, at the age of 32 years old, it could be last chance saloon at the highest level. But the Irishman plans to grasp the opportunity with both hands and cause a major upset.
“Yeah, this is a massive opportunity for me to come here on this stage and to really show my work now.
“I know people have been overlooking me and stuff like that. So this is my opportunity now to put respect and a stamp on my name. And that’s what I plan on doing Saturday night.”
Prediction and Sky Sports Betting Odds
Edgar Berlanga is a very strong favorite going into tonight’s contest and the bookies are spot on.
Berlanga is likely to emerge victorious via a 12-round unanimous decision over Jason Quigley.
In the early stages of Berlanga’s career, he appeared to be a bit of a knockout artist and fought in an aggressive all-action style.
Nevertheless, since upping the level of competition, Berlanga has looked less destructive and more willing to use his boxing skills to get the win.
And when facing Quigley, Berlanga will be in a similar dilemma, where he can’t afford to take too many risks or trade punches with Quigley in the center of the ring.
Hence, you can expect to see a safety-first performance by Berlanga by boxing on the back foot and using his superior reach and jab to rack up the rounds on the scorecard.
Quigley has been knocked out twice previously, yet Berlanga’s recent form does not suggest he has the confidence to knock out such a live opponent.
Still, do not be surprised if Berlanga does decide to go for the knockout in an attempt to restore his reputation and prove why he was so highly touted in the early stages of his professional career.
In contrast, Quigley really has nothing to lose. There are a sizeable amount of fans who are viewing him as an easy touch and a guaranteed victory for Berlanga.
Therefore, the underdog is likely to take risks and go for it from the opening bell. Quigley has no doubt watched tapes of Berlanga’s last four knockout-less bouts and probably fancies his chances.
And with 14 out of 20 wins coming via knockout, there is no reason why Quigley can’t drop or even hurt Berlanga if he connects with a solid right hand.
Unfortunately, Quigley’s optimism in the ring will probably play straight into Berlanga’s hands who won’t find it difficult to land flush on his Irish opponent.
Again, this doesn’t mean Berlanga will win via KO, yet it’s hard to see him not get the nod from the judges on his DAZN debut.
Berlanga to win - 1/16
Berlanga via KO/Stoppage - 2/7
Berlanga via decision - 7/2
Quigley to win - 7/1
Quigley via KO/Stoppage - 12/1
Quigley via Decision - 16/1
Draw - 20/1
Undercard
Adam Kownacki vs. Joe Cusumano (Heavyweights)
Reshat Mati vs. Dakota Linger (Super Lightweights)
Yankiel Rivera vs. Christian Robles (Flyweights)
Khalil Coe vs. Buneet Bisla (Light Heavyweights)
Harley Mederos vs. Pedro Vicente Scharbaai (Lightweights)
Pablo Valdez vs. Demian Daniel Fernandez (Welterweights)
The standout fight on the undercard is undoubtedly the heavyweight contest between Adam Kownacki and Joe Cusumano.
A few years ago Kownacki was seen as a legitimate prospect until he suffered two devastating stoppage losses in a row to Robert Helenius and most recently, a defeat on points to Ali Eren Demirezen.
Therefore, Kownacki’s career is on the line and the Polish boxer will be forced to hang up his gloves if he can’t beat Cusumano.
Cusumano is on a two-fight winning streak but has never hit the heights in the heavyweight division, especially following a first-round stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois in 2021.
Another exciting bout on the undercard is Reshat Mati vs Dakota Linger. Mati is a 24-year-old prospect who is currently undefeated from 13 fights. ‘The Albanian Bear’ will opt to decimate another run-of-the-mill opponent in Linger.
Not to mention, an unbeaten affair featuring Khalil Cole vs Buneet Bisla where someone’s O has got to go. And they both have knockouts on their resume so we could see an exciting, all-action spectacle.
