Jermall Charlo denies rumours about fighting Canelo Alvarez next on Cinco De Mayo weekend
Canelo has also been linked with David Benavidez, Terence Crawford and Jaime Munguia
Jermall Charlo has refuted claims that he is set to fight Canelo Alvarez on May 4th in Las Vegas for the undisputed super middleweight championship.
The rumours come after Canelo announced he will be defending his titles against an American and stating that he won’t retire from boxing for at least another five years.
“I haven’t even talked to Al Haymon since I last fought,” Charlo said while on holiday in Turks and Caicos during Valentine's Day.
“So everybody that keeps talking about ‘Oh, you about to fight Canelo, this and that’, [there] ain’t no confirmation. I’m in the Islands somewhere. Until it’s official, it’s official. I offered. I said I’ll do it if I got to do [it].”
Canelo fought Jermall Charlo’s twin brother Jermell last September and won a 12-round unanimous decision in a one-sided contest, but the Mexican superstar has yet to announce who he will face next from the PBC roster.
Meanwhile, Jermall Charlo is coming off a ten-round points victory over Jose Benavidez Jr in November to retain his WBC middleweight world title, returning after 29 months of inactivity.
Apart from Charlo, Canelo has also been linked with Terence Crawford, David Benavidez, and Jaime Munguia.
David Benavidez holds the WBC interim super middleweight championship and could become mandatory to face Canelo, while Crawford would have to move up three weight divisions to fight Canelo.
Munguia produced one of the best performances of his career to stop John Ryder last month, but Canelo has previously stated he doesn't want to fight fellow Mexicans.
