O’Shaquie Foster retains world title with split-decision victory over Abraham Nova in New York
Foster and Nova produced a thrilling spectacle at the Madison Square Garden Theater
O’Shaquie Foster made a third successive defence of the WBC super featherweight championship last night by beating Abraham Nova via 12-round split decision at the Madison Square Garden Theater, New York.
Foster scored a knockdown in the final round by landing a straight right hand followed by a sharp left hook which proved to be the difference in a highly competitive contest against Nova.
Two judges scored the contest 115-112 and 116-111 to Foster whereas the other judge scored it 114-113 to Nova.
This was a fair reflection of the bout that saw both boxers experience success as Foster connected with several eye-catching counterpunches on the back foot while Nova landed several power punches when coming forward.
Nova’s best work came in the fourth round where the challenger landed a solid right hand and then followed up with a powerful left hook to the body that forced Foster to retreat to the ropes and absorb another combination of punches.
Meanwhile, in round eight Foster was able to push Nova back with a flurry of fast punches before continuing to stamp his authority in the ninth round with a lead right hand and left hook of his own.
According to CompuBox Foster landed 17 more punches than Nova after 12 rounds and the champion also connected with more power punches.
Foster could be involved in a world title unification fight next against Emmanuel Navarrete, Joe Cordina, or Lamont Roach while Nova will look to bounce back from the second loss of his professional career.
