Tim Tszyu vs Sebastian Fundora: A tall order for the champion
Fundora will have an eight inch height advantage when he challenges Tszyu for the WBC and WBO super welterweight world titles tonight
Tim Tszyu will face a goliath-like late replacement in Sebastian Fundora tonight in Las Vegas.
The six-foot five and a half Fundora will have an eight inch height advantage over the five foot eight and a half Tsyzu when he attempts to capture the WBC and WBO super welterweight championships.
And Fundura’s style is the opposite to Keith Thurman, who was originally meant to fight Tszyu before suffering a biceps injury in training.
“It’s been a change of events but you know what, the show goes on,” Tszyu said at the final press conference.
“We saved it. Destiny awaits. I can’t wait to put on a show…For me, this period of time, it’s about collecting belts, collecting legacy. And again, as I said previously before. The greatest boxing family that ever lived is happening right now, right here. So tune in.”
Despite his freakish height for a 154 pounder, Fundura likes to come forward and trade punches which should make for an exciting spectacle with Tszyu.
“What a change of events, huh?” Fundura said.
“From opening the card to now fighting in the main event right here in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas. It’s going to be great.
“Walking in, Sam Watson told me I must have had an angel or someone praying for me because this is a big opportunity and this is a big opportunity we are gonna take advantage of and become world champion on Saturday night.”
Fundora, ‘The Towering Inferno’, is coming off a knockout loss to Brian Mendoza in early 2023, but has notable wins on his resume against Carlos Ocampo and Erickson Lubin.
Tszyu also fought Mendoza in his last bout, yet emerged victorious with a 12-round unanimous decision and the Australian has registered wins over Ocampo, Tony Harrison and Jeff Horn.
Whoever wins out of Tszyu-Fundora, could be involved in a massive fight next with Errol Spence Jr or Terence Crawford, who has petitioned to become mandatory challenger for the victor.
