Jaime Munguia stops John Ryder in ninth round and calls out Canelo Alvarez
Munguia now has a professional record of 43 wins, 34 knockouts and losses
Jaime Munguia has called out Canelo Alvarez after producing one of the best performances of his career by flooring John Ryder four times and winning via ninth-round stoppage.
Munguia, now 43-0, scored knockdowns in rounds two, four, and nine as the Mexican proved too young, fresh, and ferocious for the 35-year-old Ryder, who struggled to stamp his authority in the contest.
“It will be a great fight among Mexicans,” Muguia said in his post-fight interview through a translator.
“If Canelo gives us a chance it will be an honour to be in the same ring as him.”
Unlike Munguia, Canelo was unable to stop Ryder or drop the Brit multiple times when facing him last May in Mexico, instead cruising to a 12-round unanimous decision.
And Munguia believes he made a massive improvement from his previous bout with Sergiy Derevyanchenko whom the 27-year-old narrowly beat on points last June at Toyota Arena, Ontario.
“Last time I was just throwing punches like crazy. But this time my timing was better. My timing was perfect. Ryder was a great fighter, but we’re ready to keep on going.”
The last time Canelo shared the ring with a fellow Mexican was in 2017 against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas, but Munguia could be next to have a shot at the undisputed super middleweight championship.
Meanwhile, Ryder now has a professional record of 32-7, and after two consecutive losses, the Islington-born boxer may retire from the sport.

Just a step too far for John in the end. A long career and wear and tear have caught up on him. I'd like to see Ryder retire now. He's made a good fist of it and been a generational survivor. Nothing left to prove.
